GOE Grupo Osteointegración España is a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Pablo Corona and designed to inform, guide and support patients at every stage of the osseointegration process.
GOE Grupo Osteointegración España arise thanks to a combination of needs, intentions and opportunities.
A high percentage of Dr. Pablo Corona’s daily clinical practice is dedicated to limb salvage of severely injured (traumatic and/or infected) lower limbs, for which he is a national and international reference.
Although in the vast majority of cases the limb salvage is achieved with a good final function, some patients end up requiring an amputation. Of the transfemoral amputees, up to 30% of will report problems tolerating the traditional socket.
Dr. Corona has always wanted to provide an alternative after amputation for patients who cannot tolerate socket prostheses.
In 2018, Dr. Corona was the international guest speaker at the annual congress of the ALLARS (Australian Limb Lengthening and Reconstructive Society). During the congress he coincided with Dr. Almuderis, who was interested in Dr. Corona’s work.
From this meeting arose the possibility of starting osseointegration in Spain with the OPL implant and the single surgical protocol. The objective is to provide a functional solution to femoral amputee with socket problems. From this moment on the conversations continued, the relationships became closer and the project started to come to life.
The discussions were followed by a training phase for the surgical team, the rehabilitation team and the prosthetic team. At the end of 2019, the first osseointegration surgeries were performed at Vall D’Hebron Hospital, with excellent results.
The success of the project led to a greater need for guidance, monitoring and alternatives for patients interested in osseointegration. Throughout 2020, legal teams, hospitals, amputee groups, etc. continued to join the initial group. In February 2021 we celebrated the official launch of GOE (Grupo Osteointegración España).
